lubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal released

Julien Lavergne released Lubuntu 12.10. It is now available :

What is Lubuntu ?

Lubuntu is a flavor of Ubuntu based on the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE), as its default GUI. The goal is to provide a very lightweight distribution, with all the advantages of the Ubuntu world (repositories, support, etc.). Lubuntu is targeted at “normal” PC and laptop users running on low-spec hardware. Such users may not know how to use command line tools, and in most cases they just don’t have enough resources for all the bells and whistles of the “full-featured” mainstream distributions. With many LXDE components, Lubuntu also uses well-known applications, such as Chromium, Openbox, Pidgin, to name a few. The Lubuntu docmentation contains more information on the project and the current list of applications used.

Features

  • Based on the lightweight LXDE desktop environment.
  • Pcmanfm, a fast and lightweight files manager using gio/gvfs.
  • Openbox, the fast and extensible, default windows-manager of LXDE.
  • Lightdm, using the simple GTK greeter
  • Chromium, the open-source version of Google Chrome.
  • … and, of course, based on Ubuntu 12.10.

See the complete list of applications on https://docs.lubuntu.net/lubuntu_applications.html

Improvements since Lubuntu 12.04

  • Update of the visual identity of Lubuntu, including :
    • A completely new icon theme.
    • A new wallpaper and improvements to the current theme.
    • A selection of community wallpapers.
    • Improving integration of many applications with the new artwork.
  • A new version of the session manager is available, including more customizations and integration options (not enable by default, but available for testing).
  • A new version of pcmanfm (file manager), including at lot of bug fixes, external thumbnailer support, multiple screen support.
  • Notification-daemon have been replaced for xfce4-notifyd on the default installation, to display notifications.
  • Catfish, a searching utility, have been added to the default installation.

In the Lubuntu Web site, it is always said that Lubuntu is for old hardware, etc, sort of taking away the significance of Lubuntu. I worked a little bit with Lubuntu 12.04 and decided to try to install Gnome-shell, and it worked perfectly. I tried this with Ubuntu too, but Lubuntu was much quicker with Gnome-shell. It was 3.4 then, with all the nice extensions.

I did the same with Lubuntu 12.10 and installed Gnome shell 3.6.1 from the Ubuntu repositories, using Synaptic. And what a quick Gnome 3 distro I have! My laptop is now more than 3 years old. It works well with Ubuntu 12.10 too, but Lubuntu+Gnome is quite fast.

The other thing is in the “contact” page of Lubuntu is all about how to get help, but nowhere to write a feedback. Ubuntu forums always state that the “devs” won’t look there, so I took this opportunity to write here.

I thought of uninstalling Lubuntu-desktop, but I won’t do that. I am going to have the best of both, Lubuntu and Lubuntu + Gnome shell!

    I have posted a screenshot in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2074141

    Have a good day!

    And thank you, Lubuntu people!

ve now tried, (indeed, am NOW trying), to start the machine using the ‘Try before installation option), and, as you ca by the fact I’m typing this in chrome), it starts installing and stops on the ‘Preparing to install Lubuntu’ screen for about 15 mins, apparently doing nothing.

You now have a source of endless daily Craigslist ads that you can use over and over again instead of having to sit and wrack your brain for a new ad every time you want to post one! Craigslist has many different channels in which to post your advertisements. If you are posting ads for your business opportunity in Beauty Services or Clothing, then Craigslist will deem them irrelevant to the reader and delete them. So not only must you be posting different advertisements, but you must be posting them in the proper channel
