Lubuntu 11.10 testing

New Build System: The transition from our internal lubuntu build to Canonical build has taken a little while. Whilst our Lubuntu head of dev (Julien) has managed to squeeze 26 hours into 24 hour days, also the people who look after the automated build system have been really 'up for' ensuring that they have lubuntu building automatically. We had a dip of 5 days, but are doing well. For them to be able to get not just a basic alternate install, but the full suite of all architectures is a testament to them. At present, we have daily LiveCD builds and alternate. There are still some things to iron out. Keep an eye onhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Testing as to where we are up to. Regards, Phill.

The Beta is scheduled to be out today. I have been trying the Alpha 3. I run Zorin OS 5 Lite which has Lubuntu in it. I hope the Fatal Ramz error reported in Alpha gets ironed out. Going to check out the highlighted Html.

i expect alternate install like bodhi - base install with only synaptic, lxde desktop, browser and drivers...

This would be great.

If this is going to be an absolute minimum distro, as in as light as possible but still look alright, then why not replace Chromium with the much lighter yet fully functional Midori browser?

It is badly broken. I design websites using current standards and I make it a point to test how they render in various operating system/browser combinations. Midori is no where NEAR the accuracy or capability of FF, Chromium, or even IE9. Somethings break entirely. Midori is not ready for mainstream, prime-time use. Chromium is by far a superior browser.

Tried out the beta. Looks great. I'll be installing Lubuntu when 11.10 is released. I can't be arsed to deal with all that Unity bloat.

Keep up all the good work, it's definitely appreciated by many. This is by far my favorite distro ATM.

very good work, i now downloaded the 11.10 ISO and it look great, very nice desktop. my problem is the software come in it, some basic tools like gcc/make/cmake are missing and i would like to see them in the installation media (i sometimes install Linux to religious people who believe the Internet harm their children's education and do not use it, this also may be useful for developer who don't use lubuntu but want to verify that their software can work on it) another tool i would like to see in is any kind of presentation tool (other Ubuntu derivatives came with full libreoffice pack). is there any place when people "vote" for what software be included and what not? the disk is less then 650 MB, so it had enough space for more software

Lubuntu should not be including any extra bulky packages, especially for any religious reason -nada. If you really want any of these extra packages, then do what the rest of the world is very comfortable doing, namely: "apt-get install " or, aptitude install ... or from the Synaptic GUI, or any other (L)Ubuntu Software installer. It just couldn't be easier ! The reason for the < 650MB is to keep it that way, for the future. GL

I highly recommend that if there is going to be a base version of Lubuntu made, the browser be switched from Chromium to Midori. For starters it's much lighter than Chromium, it's still a webkit browser and compatible with many HTML5 web standards, it's GTK so it integrates well with LXDE and it scores highly with the Acid3 tests.

I hope not! Google Chrome is the best Non Internet Explorer Browser and I was delighted that Lubuntu had chosen that project (chromium). I downloaded Midori and could within 5 minutes find several important web-sites (official ones in Sweden) that Midori could not handle out of the box. Do not look at Acid3 or any test what so ever. You cannot rely on people following standards when they build the websites. The important thing is that the browser handles the code. Midori is like most other browser not that "Internet explorer" compliant. Chromium is. Switching to light versions should not adventure basic funtionalities. No, I hope Lubuntu stick to Chromium. Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 is slower than the 11.04 version, both startup and shutdown are slow. And the wireless does not work in it (Broadcom STA). Have installed Peppermint 2 again.

I have a one suggestion for this lubuntu 11.10, and i am not even developer or an expert, so you know peppermint two, they do have mouse and touchpad, which is very nice it setting, because if for anybody want to disable touch-pad, and prefer the mouse than touch-pad, so it is better without configured the code from start session, hope you can add it from that, that's would be nice! thanks

I agree, the name of it is mintinput

Lubuntu 11.10 consumes twice the RAM compared to 11.04 (ex. 11.04=70 MB ram, 11.10=140 MB ram)

a lot better than ubuntu and kubuntu. less hassles. kubuntu causes as many headaches as windows. i had ubuntu installed for a day, and did like it, and then downloaded lubuntu 11.04 and other then, getting a pair of reading glasses on the some of the text, i would perfer a default font a little bigger. about the only request. thank you very much for coming out with it. my windows installation was no more.

Iron is a Chromium based web browser but without any problems at privacy and security. http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

I think that the problems are in Chrome, not Chromium.

No thanks. http://chromium.hybridsource.org/the-iron-scam http://neugierig.org/software/chromium/notes/2009/12/iron.html

works great thanks for all the hard works great

For 11.04, there was an unofficial 64-bit build of Lubuntu. Hopefully, we can get an official 64-bit build for 11.10?

So what is going to change in Lubuntu 11.10??... will it be as fast as it is now..... i love Lubuntu 11.04 exept for the e-mail client, i prefer thunderbird ;)

It has been so cold with the freeze. Just the desktop comes up. Been running sudo apt-get autoremove, sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade and even sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-missing but still I miss the desktop working right. My last downloaded CD was the 9/29/11 one. Before with the kernel 3.0.0-10 one could use the kernel header recovery mode. At present there is 3.0.0-12.19 but I still just got the 3.0.0-12 without the point 19. I will sure be glad when it is done. I am glad that I kept Zorin OS Lite 5 on the IDE hard drive while experimenting with the SATA drive with Alpha, Beta 1 and now Beta 2.

When I upgraded from 11.04 Lubuntu to the beta 11.10 I noticed that the GDM has been replaced by LightDM. I have replaced the LXDM with GDM because I could not found any alternative to have the autologin enabled. Since the LightDM came across there was no way for me to have the autologin enabled so I needed to reinstall the 11.04 with the GDM back on my pc. I hope that the autologin enabling works well now with LightDM and that the final version will not consume lots of memory as what I have read through the testings stories so far.

When I did a clean wipe of 9/29/11 and downloaded 10/5/11 there was a noticeable difference. Today is 10/12/11 and the only thing I encountered not working is the extra kernel recovery menu working right. It is still at read-only. Nvidia 280.13 drivers are working great and I like the PPA Lubuntu software center. The LXpanel allows one to run the panel on top now. Pulse audio is working great. :)

La più bella distro linux-un ottimo lavoro grazie

Hai perfettamente ragione.

How do i change my wallpaper, i do click the right button of the mouse and it pops up a menu for open box and not for the desktop config or something. And i just can't find where is the configuration for this in the apps main
