== What is Lubuntu ? ==

Lubuntu is a Ubuntu variant using the LXDE desktop. It's designed to be a lightweight and easy-to-use desktop environment. Lubuntu is currently not part of the Ubuntu family, and not build with the current Ubuntu infrastructure. This release is considered as a « stable beta », a result that could be a final and stable release if it was included in the Ubuntu family. Please note also that Lubuntu 10.04 is not a LTS version. For the future we aim to include all packages of lubuntu in the Ubuntu repository.

== Features ==

- Based on the lightweight LXDE desktop environment.
- Pcmanfm 0.9.5, the rewrite of pcmanfm using gio/gvfs.
- Lxdm, a new and lightweight GTK display manager.
- Chromium, the open-source version of Google Chrome.
- ... and, of course, based on Ubuntu 10.04

== Specific Lubuntu changes ==

Lubuntu still contains modifications not available in the official repository, you can see them in the Lubuntu PPA [1] :
- New pcmanfm2 and libfm (LP: #523433)
- lubuntu-default-settings with pcmanfm2 support
- Fix for blurry shutdown-icon from elementary-icons (LP: #527345)
- Autologin support in ubiquity (LP: #546445)

== Thanks of Julien ==

I would like to thank all people involved in the development of Lubuntu during this past 6 months :

Thanks to the LXDE team for providing this nice desktop environment.

Thanks to Rafael for his wonderful work on the artwork.

Thanks to Mario for his wonderful work on the website, the wiki and all the advertising.

Thanks to all testers which help in the testing process, and make Lubuntu better.

Thanks to all people which help to provide support and documentation to new Lubuntu users.

It was a pleasure to work with you.

This release is not an end, but just the beginning. More will happen in the next releases :-)

Julien Lavergne generated a final iso lubuntu testing release before announcing the public release.

The download is available here:  http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/lubuntu-lucid-20100430.iso

(md5sum: http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/md5sum.txt)

The release fixed a problem with installed languages, and includes some bug fixes for pcmanfm/libfm.

Please test it and report any blocker you are encountering that would stop this release to become the lubuntu 10.04 release. This iso should be the last one if no other problems are found.

The Lubuntu Lucid Beta 3 is now available released by Julien Lavergne. We are now close to the final release, this beta should be the last one before final release. The status of this final release is not determined yet ("beta stable", "rc final" ...), that's why its a beta and not a rc like other *buntu. However, final release is still planned for the end of this month, or in very early May.

Julien Lavergne has released Lubuntu Lucid Beta 2. Don't forget that it's build with Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) which is still in Beta state of development, so same warnings :

"Pre-releases of Lucid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage.  They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs."

We passed Feature Freeze, that mean most of the features should now be available. It's now time for testing and fixing bugs.

PCMan, the founder of LXDE, has some ideas about "how to make lubuntu better", that I would like to share with you.

One thing I think every developer can do to make Lubuntu better is quite simple. Lubuntu developers can help check if dialogs in LXDE programs can conform to Gnome HIG. Currently, most dialogs in PCManFM/libfm are designed with Gnome HIG in mind, but there are still some missing bits. Since glade is used to create those dialogs, it's not difficult to fix them. If a dialog is too big for devices with small screen like Netbooks, "this is a bug" and should be reported in the trackers. Help is also needed to make them fit small screens. Most of time I develop them with small screen in mind so this might not a problem, but we need to make sure. Another thing you can do with the source code is making sure every GtkDialog is created with gtk_dialog_set_alternative_button_order() called. This is required to make all apps work in consistent ways. To improve user experience, those are things need to be ensure.

I plan to stay in sync with the Ubuntu release cycle as much as possible
(see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidReleaseSchedule).
So, next release should be near the January 14th.
